Sometimes –
She wondered,
“Why are humans so beautifully broken?”
Just the other day –
Someone mentioned
How sad they were;
All she could say – “yeah, me too”
(With a shrug, eyes welling up)

Sometimes –
She wondered,
“Why do we make sadness a competition?”
Just the other day –
Someone commented
How much more their sadness weighed against her
All she could say – “Oh, that bad – huh?”
(With a shrug, eyes welling up)

Sometimes –
She wondered,
“Why does death seem so sweet?”
Just the other day –
Someone pointed out
How her sister had overdosed on the pills
All she could say – “I don’t remember her”
(With a shrug, eyes welling up)

Now,
As she stood –
Drooped shoulder and weak knees
Eyes, filled
She’d realized the why’s
And followed her sister home
(With a body hanging by a thread
A letter that wasn’t found)
